Character Engine
A way of looking at a single character as a working system. Five fields, checked for whether they hold together and drive the story forward.

The drive
What moves the character towards what they want or desire.
Goal
What the character is trying to get. The concrete want or desire that gives their actions a destination and lets the reader measure progress. A character without a goal drifts, and the reader has nothing to hope for or against.
Motivation
Why the goal matters to them. The reason underneath the want or desire, the thing that makes them pay a price for it. Motivation is the difference between a character who would like to achieve the goal and one who cannot walk away from it.
Proactivity
Whether the character drives events or only reacts to them. Their actions and choices, taken under their own volition rather than handed to them by the plot. A proactive character makes the story happen; a passive one waits for it to arrive.
The opposition
What the drive has to be won against.
External conflict
The resistance that comes from outside the character. Other people, circumstances, a relentless and unforgiving world. This is the visible obstacle the character has to overcome.
Internal conflict
The resistance that comes from inside. Doubt, fear, a competing loyalty, the part of the character that works against their own goal. It is why someone can see a clear path and still fail to take it.
Reading the fields together
The five are not worked on one at a time. What the engine tests is whether they work together. A goal with no motivation is thin. Proactivity with nothing to resist it is frictionless. Conflict with no goal behind it is just a bad storm passing through. A character holds up when the five agree with one another.
The Character Engine stands on its own, one character at a time. Read it beside the Tension Anchor Framework, which handles a story's structure, and the two together surface a deeper analysis than either does alone.
